About Herbal Teas
Herbal Teas: A Natural Tradition of Healing and Harmony
History
Herbal teas have been a cornerstone of traditional medicine and daily life for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks, and Indigenous cultures all brewed plants into soothing and medicinal infusions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, herbs have long been used to balance the body’s systems, enhance energy, and support healing. Over time, these practices spread globally, evolving into the vast and vibrant tea culture we see today.
What Are Herbal Teas?
Herbal teas, also known as tisanes, are beverages made by steeping herbs, flowers, spices, or other plant materials in hot water. Unlike true teas (which come from the Camellia sinensis plant), herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free and come in an endless array of flavors and healing properties.
Common Herbal Tea Ingredients:
-
Chamomile – Calming, aids sleep and digestion
-
Peppermint – Soothes the digestive tract, relieves headaches
-
Ginger – Anti-inflammatory, aids nausea and circulation
-
Lemon balm – Uplifting and calming for anxiety
-
Hibiscus – High in vitamin C, supports heart health
-
Nettle – Nourishing, rich in minerals, supports kidney function
-
Elderflower – Immune-supporting and fever-reducing
How to Make Herbal Tea
-
Choose your herb(s) – fresh or dried.
-
Measure – I like to use 1 heaping tablespoon for each cup of tea that I make for myself. However, you can use as much or as little as you'd like. For a stronger tea use a little more and vice versa.
-
Boil water
-
Steep – Pour hot water over the herbs and cover. Steep 10-15 minutes.
-
Strain and enjoy – Add honey, lemon, or other herbs to taste.
- Iced Tea - If you prefer a refreshing glass of iced tea, just steep, strain, cool then add to a glass of ice. I like to fix my tea in a half gallon mason jar. Let it steep and cool then stick it in my fridge. That way I have enough to sip on all day.
